ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE

We are Kelly and Joe, and we are the proud owners of Olde Stoney.

We hope that you find Olde Stoney as relaxing, peaceful and beautiful as we do, and we are committed to ensuring that your stay at Olde Stoney meets and exceeds your expectations.  We are not property managers or speculative vacation-rental investors, and we end up staying at Olde Stoney when it is not booked.  Because of that, we share the same experience as our guests, which allows us to always look for ways to improve your stay.

When you see the words “beautiful,” “gorgeous,” “amazing,” etc. on this site, please know those words are not the creation of some content marketing guru.  Those adjectives are firmly held beliefs by us and truly reflects our opinion of Olde Stoney and its place on SML.  We value and appreciate your business, and we realize that when you decide to rent from us, you are passing up other beautiful destinations on SML.   We want to be as transparent as possible and provide you the necessary information for you to decide on where to stay on SML.  Olde Stoney sits on an amazing piece of property on SML; over 1.75 acres, with a gentle slope to the water, a dock to keep your boat, a sandy beach area for swimming, a huge swim platform, a floating PWC dock, a 3 minute boat ride to Mariners Landing (restaurant and boat rentals) and a five minute boat ride to Mitchells Marina (restaurant and boat rentals).  Within a 10-20 minute boat ride, you can reach Smith Mountain and the Dam, Bernard’s Landing (great restaurant in Franklin County), the State Park, and Portside Grill (the best chicken wings on the lake).  It takes about 25-30 minutes to get to Bridgewater by boat.

The original structure of Olde Stoney was built in the 1970’s with a considerable addition added in the mid-80s.  Olde Stoney was completely renovated in 2013; new kitchen (granite counter top and cabinets), modern bathrooms, new carpet, etc.  We try to keep Olde Stoney clean and pleasant.  The bathrooms are a little on the small side, but newly renovated and clean.  The master bedroom is enormous and includes an additional bunk bed (perfect for kids).   The house is not fancy (when compared to some of the other magnificent homes on SML), but very clean, comfortable and appealing.  And we have the best pinball machine on the lake (well, not sure if it is the best on the lake, but pinball challenges are fun).

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE

Smith Mountain Lake is Virginia's most popular lake nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains between Roanoke and Lynchburg offering superb recreational activities, 500 miles of shoreline, and a wide variety of water sports.  Known locally as "SML," it is the "Jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains".   Surrounded by mountains, Smith Mountain Lake's deepest point is about 250 feet, near the dam itself (10 minute boat ride from Olde Stoney).  Its "average" depth is 55 feet, with hundreds of coves off its main channel for exploration and adventure.  One of our favorite day activities is to pack a lunch and the portable grill, find a remote cove right off Smith Mountain, throw out the anchor and turn up the music; makes for a glorious day (during the Summer months, you better get there early because the coves fill up).  The quality and cleanliness of SML’s water is superb; great for snorkeling.  Water temperatures invite swimming from May through September.
